The Exhibition

Ancestral Power and the Aesthetic is the first exhibition to give focus to the extraordinary painted works collected from Arnhem Land by the University of Melbourne anthropologist, the late Professor Donald Thomson (1901-1970). The works in the exhibition comprise 20 extraordinary bark paintings and 16 objects including painted baskets and other men’s ceremonial objects as well as artists’ tools and pigments.

Curator: Ms Lindy Allen

Photographs from the Potter Museum, University of Melbourne

The Pitch
We would like to offer this exhibition to regional Victorian venues.

Given the high value of the works in the vicinity of $5.5m and size and nature of the works, a risk assessment will be required that includes an assessment of venues and whether they meet the highest international standards for exhibition, security and handling required. This includes identifying requirements for conservation and other MV staff to install and/or pack up the exhibition at particular venues, and with this, opportunities for MV to contribute to the skills development of staff in regional venues in Victoria particularly may be identified.

Specifications:

20 bark paintings

180-220 square metres
